Tim Brennan 

TOEFL Instructor

Tim is a dynamic English instructor who takes pride in helping his students achieve their academic goals. He holds a B.A. in Applied Linguistics from Winona State University and he is passionate about studying language and culture. Tim has taught English in elementary schools, high schools and private language academies in Spain and here in Chicago as well. Tim currently teaches TOEFL classes at The College of Chicago where he stresses the importance of building academic vocabulary and test-taking strategies.

Additionally, Tim is completing a Master’s degree in Teaching English Learners at the American College of Education. As a bilingual English-Spanish speaker, he values biliteracy and considers himself an activist for programs that promote additive bilingualism. Outside of work, Tim enjoys reading, speaking Spanish, exploring the street festivals of Chicago, longboarding, playing basketball and traveling.

Nathan Rearden

ESL Instructor

Nathan Rearden’s interest in interacting with people from all over the world has led him to a varied career of international and domestic ESL teaching. After graduating from Eastern Illinois University with a Bachelor’s degree in English, Nathan moved to South Korea for two years. There he discovered his passion for teaching English as a Second Language while working at a Korean public school. Nathan returned to the United States in December 2014. He completed his Certificate for English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) the following month and has since been teaching ESL at Illinois language schools. Nathan attempts to make his classes as student-centered as possible, acting as a facilitator to help his students discover the language and make connections. In his spare time, Nathan enjoys reading fiction and listening to music.
